Become one of those people who work for The Temple News

The Temple News is having a writer’s workshop Thursday, Feb. 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Ritter Hall in Walk Auditorium. It’ll be a great opportunity for reporters, photographers and videographers to learn more about the process at the paper as well as start writing/shooting/editing if they haven’t already. And, since not everyone will have written or shot photos before, the staff will review basic reporting and photography concepts in smaller groups for those interested.

The section editors for news, opinion, living, arts and entertainment, sports, photography and multimedia will also be there to help brainstorm and develop ideas, talk about what’s missing from the paper and how everyone can contribute. Haven’t heard of The Temple News? It’s OK, come anyway! And look for a big red thing with papers inside of it and pick one up or visit us at temple-news.com.

Former Temple student found not guilty in shooting

As reported on Broad & Cecil earlier, Gerald Ung, a former Temple student, stood trial today for shooting Edward DiDonato on Jan. 17, 2010. Ung was found not guilty by a Philadelphia jury, Philly.com reports.

The former law student plead self-defense in his reasoning for shooting DiDonato, a Villanova graduate, six times in Old City last year.

According to the Daily News article, Ung, 29, was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime.

Ung, the article reads, “contended that he shot DiDonato in self-defense after being followed, threatened and lunged at by DiDonato and three of his friends.”

Ung had a permit from Fairfax County, Va., to legally carry the gun.

A Facebook group, “Gerald Ung is innocent,” was created last January after the shooting; discussion topics have continued to generate posts.

Pennsylvania students rally at capitol

Students from Temple, the University of Pittsburgh, Lincoln University and Penn State University came together today to rally the support of state politicians for state funding.

Joining under PASS, the Pennsylvania Association of State-related Students, students lined the stairwell in the rotunda of the Capitol building in Harrisburg at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Throughout the Rally for Higher Education, students took turns taking the podium to share personal stories, sing, or begin chants.

Temple Student Government’s, the organizing body behind Temple’s participation in PASS and the rally, Student-body President Natalie Ramos-Castillo made an address at the beginning of the rally. Ramos-Castillo was joined by the leaders of the student governments from the other three state-related schools, as well.

The total number of students appeared to be around 250 students.

State representatives occasionally walked by, while others stopped to take notice of the rally.

Former Philadelphia Mayor and Temple alum John F. Street was in attendance for quite some time, wearing a Temple hat and watching the rally unfold.

The “T for Temple U” chant and a rehearsed “I believe, I believe, I believe that we need funds,” song were two of the chants used a number of times to entice the crowd.

The rally ended at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Black Hawk Down

It seems as though 12 p.m. really is the universal hour to munch on some midday food – for humans and animals.  Outside Annenberg Hall, a hawk swooped down for a quick snack after his magazine writing class.  While most people would prefer a tuna fish sandwich from the Lucky Cup, Big Bird over here would rather peck into a nice juicy squirrel.  One student called it a spectacle.  If these images turn your beer-gut stomachs in knots, read on Grace Dickinson‘s opinion article about a healthy vegan/vegetarian alternative diet in The Temple News.

It case the hawk didn’t know, Annenberg Hall has an atrium, not an aviary.

Backpack explosion stops SEPTA

While the exact cause of a fire that happened at Girard station has yet to surface, it appears as though it may have come from a backpack placed near construction materials on the northbound platform of the Broad Street Line, according to Philadelphia Police Chief David Scott.

Chief Scott also said the appropriate federal agencies have been contacted. The explosion at the station suspended service on the SEPTA line for more than two hours and caused gridlock for traffic along Broad Street.

Andrew Davis, who works at Liberty Tax Service on the corner of Broad and Girard, was inside when it happened. “When I looked down the street south going down Broad Street, there was a bunch of black smoke coming out [from the subway station,]” said Davis. “The police were here within three minutes.”

Dan, an employee at the Underground Market at Broad Street, said the smoke was coming out of all of the vents along Broad Street near Girard.

As of 5:00 p.m., SEPTA is operating a shuttle bus service between Cecil B Moore and Walnut-Locust stations, though Chief Scott said he anticipated that subway service would resume soon.
