‘Eyes around Temple’ Facebook group created after armed robberies

After a TU Alert was sent out Friday, Dec. 10 and today informing students of four armed robberies that occurred in off-campus housing, “Toast McButter” created a Facebook group to raise awareness. The group already has 403 attendees. The following is an excerpt from the “more info” section:

“You are all probably aware of the INCREASED CRIME occurring around the off campus part of Temple University. I have lived off campus for 3 years and this year is by far the worst.

“…The economy is DOWN hard and when it is crime is UP. I am tired of hearing TEMPLE STUDENTS being robbed and assaulted. We are not targets, We need to stand together to help one another.

“Some people say it’s our fault for living off campus, but last time I checked this was AMERICA and we can live wherever we please. For most it’s not even an option with Temple having so little on campus housing( <— Big Issue).”

If you or someone you know was affected by the recent armed robberies, please contact news@temple-news.com.

Former Temple Basketball Player Dionte Christmas Arrested in Philly

Last night, former A-10 three time scoring champ Dionte Christmas was arrested on Nedro Avenue near Broad Street after being spotted driving erratically in a car with heavily tinted windows, according to Philly Confidential, an online blog for the Philadelphia Daily News. After officers stopped him, officers found that Christmas was driving without a license and spotted a loaded semiautomatic handgun under the driver’s seat.  It was later determined that the car Christmas was driving and the gun belonged to Philadelphia 76ers forward/center Marreese Speights. Christmas also had a passenger with him, but was not charged with any wrong doing.

Following his career at Temple last year, Christmas went undrafted in the NBA and on Wednesday was waived by the Sixers after playing four preseason games with the team.

TU Advisory issued in near-campus robbery/assault

Campus Safety Services issued a TU Advisory this evening to warn students that a 19-year-old female non-Temple-student was robbed and assaulted by an unknown male after midnight last night on the 1600 block of Fontain Street. Fontain is located between Diamond and Norris, 16th and 17th streets.

The Advisory reads:

Police said the 19-year-old female was on the 1600 block of Fontain Street after midnight Wednesday, Oct. 14, when she was approached by a man who said he had a weapon. After forcing her into a vacant lot where the two struggled, the woman fought him off. He got away with a small amount of money. The woman reported being groped, but not otherwise harmed.”

CSS also urged students to utilize the TUrDoor service or OwlLoop shuttle when traveling late at night.

Five Nova students arrested for breaking into Linc

Five students from Villanova University were arrested last night for breaking into and vandalizing Lincoln Financial Field.

Among other things, the vandals stole a seat — Section 108, Row 30, Seat 1 — from the stadium. NBC10 has their mugs.

Villanova has released a statement on the students’ arrests:

If these students were involved in misconduct, we are deeply disappointed in their behavior and poor judgment. Villanova has also opened its own internal review to determine if there have been violations of the Student Code of Conduct. Villanova University holds all of its students to a high standard and takes any allegations of wrongdoing very seriously.

Shoplifting squirrel evades Richie

Yes, Richie from Richie’s Deli and Pizza in front of Anderson Hall. Today around 5:30 p.m., Richie posted this on Facebook:

He said a shoplifting squirrel – who has become notorious among Richie’s regulars – steals a chocolate/chocolate chip muffin from the box on his window counter every day. The squirrel, Richie said, has been at large for the past two weeks.

“Ain’t it funny? Every day, every time I’m trying to be creative so [the squirrel] doesn’t steal, he finds a different way,” Richie said. “And he’s been stealing it at lunch time, not when it’s dead. He steals it when I’m the busiest.”

Richie said the squirrel generally strikes between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and is adept at unwrapping both the plastic wrap the muffins come in and the extra layer Richie adds in the morning.

“People see him steal and no one tells me he’s stealing,” Richie said. “He climbs up [on the counter], goes under and around [then] he finds the chocolate muffin and takes it. Everyone just gets a kick out of it.”

OK, so Richie was likely kidding about the $100 reward, but, rest assured, he will take good care of whomever catches the sticky-handed rodent.

This photo is being used for identification purposes in the effort to find the tiny thief.

Crime Report of the Week: Do periodicals turn you on?

Well, they sure do it for someone.

The first entry of this morning’s daily crime report reads:

“Student reported that she observed an unknown male inappropriately touching himself in the periodical area at 9:13 p.m. Sept. 11. Male fled without incident.”

No joke, kids. Looks like someone gets his jollies from journals.

Remember that episode of Friends where Ross gets mad because he finds out students are having sex in the paleontology section next to his published thesis? I think they had the right idea, that is, if you’ve got to do anything of that nature in the library, you’d do well to keep it confined to the stacks …

… just kidding!
