Diamond Marching Band recognized in Rolling Stone Magazine

The Temple University Diamond Marching Band has another accomplishment to add to its name.

Rolling Stone has listed the band’s cover of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” in their “10 Mind-Blowing College Marching Band Cover Songs” published online on Sept. 17.

“It’s only fitting that Temple blows up the song into its most grandiose form with a version loud enough to fill a stadium,” Rolling Stone said in the article.

Others on the list are the Univeristy of California at Berkleley’s cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” Iowa State University’s cover of No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs” and a Skrillex Medley by Michigan State’s marching band.

The Temple University social media accounts quickly took to both Twitter and Facebook sharing the article on their pages.

The Diamond Marching Band’s performance of the cover can be found on YouTube.

Student Activities to plan Spring Fling alternatives

After Temple officials recently cancelled the school’s long-running Spring Fling tradition due to excessive amounts of student drinking, administrators have announced they will begin to plan alternatives this fall.

Director of Student Activities Chris Carey said that in the next few weeks, Student Activities will be partnering with other organizations to brainstorm new spring programs.

“It is important to note that we are not looking for one program to replace Spring Fling, but rather programs that will achieve goals of creating school sprit and a sense of engagement among the campus community,” Carey said.

Student Body President Darin Bartholomew said he will also be a driving force in the effort.

“In the coming weeks we will be having a TSG general assembly meeting that focuses on campus life and the discussion topic that week will be ideas for a spring event that allows us to show off the great things that happen on campus and all the opportunities Temple has to offer,” Bartholomew said.

CSS speaks at second TSG meeting

Charlie Leon, acting executive director of Campus Safety Services, spoke at Temple Student Government’s second meeting of the semester Monday night, Sept. 16, in room 200C of the Student Center. He went over past incidents, the trend of campus safety so far this semester and new initiatives.

The first incident from this semester which Leon highlighted was a Temple student who was jumped by other students on Aug. 22. The accused aggressors are being charged with aggravated assault.

The other incident Leone discussed was the block party on North 15th and Fontain streets on Aug. 23. He explained how Temple police, in cooperation with the other police forces in the area, broke up the block party early. After all was said and done, there were over 250 citations and referrals, 30 people were taken to the hospital for alcohol and four people arrested for operating an illegal bar.

Leone displayed a chart comparing number of incidents in August 2012 to August 2013 with a noticeable drop across the board.

However, as The Temple News reported in the Sept. 17 issue, campus police crackdowns have resulted in around 270 arrests or citations in the first four weeks of school.

He also announced a number of new programs including student focus groups for feedback, new safety awareness videos and a bike registration program designed at cutting down bike theft.

Temple Police will also be issued electronic tablets to make incident reporting easier, according to Leone. The last of the announced initiatives is called “Walking Escort Program” which allows Temple students to request an escort to get home by calling 8-9255 from a campus phone or 215-777-9255 between 4 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The second scheduled guest, Institutional Advancement’s Associate Director Student and Employer Networks, Maureen Fisher, was absent.

Next, the directors of TSG’s individual departments were announced then individually introduced themselves and explained what they are planning to accomplish for the future.

Two positions are still open within TSG, Speaker of the General Assembly and Auditor General. Both applications can be found in the TSG office and interviews will be conducted soon.

The meeting ended with the open forum where, among other issues, a number of students noted problems with their academic advising.

Busy day for CSS at Morgan Hall

Three separate incidents occurred today at Morgan Hall, including accidental fire alarms, people trapped in an elevator and a mysterious hole in an window of which campus police have yet to determine the cause.

The first incident occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Sept. 15. Temple police responded to calls about a mysterious hole in a window on the eighth floor on the south side of Morgan Hall, said Acting Executive Director of Campus Safety Services Charlie Leone.

Leone said the hole was slightly larger than a golf ball, and police do not believe it was caused by a firearm. Leone said police found no projectile, but did find broken glass both inside the building and on the street below. Due to the height of the window, it was hard to tell if the cause of the hole came from inside or outside.

Leone said students reported hearing “firecrackers” shortly before the hole was found.

The second incident occurred later in the afternoon when contractors working inside the building accidentally tripped the fire alarms in both the north and south sections of the building.

The third incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m., when three elevators in the tower stopped working. Two people were trapped inside one of the elevators for around 30 minutes. Security officers in the building contacted the Otis Elevator Company and the Philadelphia Fire Department, the later of whom arrived to free the two people trapped.

None of the incidents appear related, Leone said.

$250K to add lighting to park

Columbus Plaza, more commonly known as the skate park on Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, is undergoing a $250,000 renovation this fall to add lighting and furniture, James Creedon, senior vice president of facilities, construction and operations, said

The first phase of the project, to be completed by September 24, will install ground lighting around the base of the trees in the park, as well as the installation of new furniture such as tables and chairs.

The second phase, to be completed by mid-October, will install street lighting along the park.

The purpose of the project, Creedon said, is to “light [the park] up at night so people can go in there and feel comfortable.”

The parks present tile and gravel flooring will not be altered, Creedon said. Currently, the park is mainly used by skateboarders from Temple and the surrounding area.
