Margaret Carney appointed as architect

Temple Chief Financial Officer Anthony Wagner appointed Margaret Carney, from Case Western Reserve University, as associate vice president and university architect.

Carney will oversee the implementation of the 20/20 plan for campus development and “all matters relating to the physical character and quality of Temple’s campuses.”

Former Temple professors may find seats on city ethics board

Phyllis W. Beck, a retired Superior Court judge, and Michael H. Reed, a lawyer at Pepper Hamilton LLP, may find themselves appointed to Philadelphia’s Board of Ethics, the Inquirer reports.

Beck is a former law professor at both Temple and the University of Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Reed is a former adjunct professor at Temple and a 1969 alumnus, his biography page reads.

The article suggests Mayor Michael Nutter is expected to nominate the Beck and Reed to two vacant spots in the near future. City Council would have to confirm the appointments.

Drunk at the…Student Center?

At approximately 4:45 p.m., today, a girl was seen being placed on a stretcher on the outside of the Einstein Bros. in the Student Center.

A witness said the girl appeared intoxicated.

Temple police and medical personnel escorted the girl into an ambulance outside the Student Center.

Black Hawk Down

It seems as though 12 p.m. really is the universal hour to munch on some midday food – for humans and animals.  Outside Annenberg Hall, a hawk swooped down for a quick snack after his magazine writing class.  While most people would prefer a tuna fish sandwich from the Lucky Cup, Big Bird over here would rather peck into a nice juicy squirrel.  One student called it a spectacle.  If these images turn your beer-gut stomachs in knots, read on Grace Dickinson‘s opinion article about a healthy vegan/vegetarian alternative diet in The Temple News.

It case the hawk didn’t know, Annenberg Hall has an atrium, not an aviary.

Snow-fueled bitterness ensues

It appears as though students aren’t yet over the university’s decision to remain open, despite severe weather conditions, last Thursday, Jan. 27.

While a Facebook group and iPetition, calling for the university to reconsider its policies when it comes to weather conditions, were started in response to the university’s decision, a new Facebook group has popped up on the web. Though this one is a little less serious and, presumably, a bit more sarcastic.

A new Facebook group, “If the world ends in 2012, at least Temple University will still be open,” was recently started and already has over 3,000 “likes.” My guess is that it has a tiny bit to do with last Thursday’s events.

At least the university now knows the cyber-unity students are willing to forge in the midst of class during snowfall — or an apocalypse.

Can you guess the most influential college on Twitter? Temple’s No. 8

According to a ranking system by Klout.com, a website used to measure one’s online significance, Temple’s official twitter account (@templeuniv) is ranked No. 8 when it comes to influential colleges on Twitter.

Each college was ranked on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being more significant. A college’s score was determining 35 different factors, including how many people the twitter account reaches, how often your tweets are retweeted and how influential your followers are.

Temple’s score was 53. Stanford came in No. 1 with a score of 70.

Florida coach to fill head coaching position

Steve Addazio, offensive coordinator of the University of Florida’s football program, has been named Temple’s new head football coach by multiple media outlets. Addazio will fill the shoes of former coach Al Golden, who recently announced his resignation and plans to become head coach at the University of Miami.

Sources, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and SportingNews.com, have reported that Addazio will become the new head coach after he was not retained by Florida when it hired its new head coach, Will Muschamp.

It is expected that the university will officially announce the new head coach at a 11 a.m. press conference, tomorrow.

What do you think about the former coach of the Gators filling the vacant position?

Doug is in the house

Zumba is a great way to burn off some serious calories, but I’d rather learn how to Dougie any day.  People will do crazy things to get their 15-minutes of fame and these four girls tore up the student section at the Georgetown basketball game last night at the Liacouras Center.  Someone please contact the the Fitness Coordinator Crista Sandner at the IBC Recreation Center and have her hire these Owls as dance instructors. Got to love that school spirit!
