Cop attacked at Cecil B. Moore station while riders watch

A SEPTA surveillance video posted to Philly.com Monday shows an assault on a SEPTA police officer inside the Cecil B. Moore subway station that occurred on Thursday, Sept. 19, as onlookers watched with no one taking action.

The video, which showed a time stamp of just after 3 p.m., shows a crowd of subway riders entering the train while a cop, identified by Philly.com as Officer Samuel Washington, attempts to stop a man who had allegedly entered the station without paying.

Shortly after the train departs the station, the video shows the man violently struggle with Washington before grabbing hold of the officer and flipping him over, and then under, a bench.

A crowd of onlookers then gathers around the two, with the Washington remaining pinned under the bench for about a minute before he appears to grab hold of his attacker’s face or neck, and pulls himself up to arrest the man.

No one from the crowd gathered to watch the struggle took action to help the officer, and one woman appeared to have stopped a phone call to take a picture or video of the incident.

The video was posted to Philly.com alongside an article by Daily News columnist Helen Ubinas, who refers to the lack of action taken by passersby as the “Philly Shrug.”

Continuance set for former Temple football player awaiting trial

A motion of continuance set by the commonwealth for a former Temple football player charged with raping a woman on campus has been delayed until Thursday.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph McGlynn was attending another trial while the defendant, Praise Martin-Ogikue, 19, was waiting in the courtroom with his parents by his side.

Martin-Ogikue is pending trial for an alleged rape of a woman during Memorial Day weekend in May 2012.

According to numerous news sources, a 21-year-old female Temple student was inside the defendant’s dorm room when he allegedly attacked her, forcing the victim upstairs and raped her before signing her out of his dorm apartment as if nothing happened.

During the motions hearing, Defense Attorney James A. Funt was not reluctant to mention his need to continue, expressing concerns of collecting and filing more than 40 text messages to be used as evidence for trial.

The trial is set to begin on Oct. 7.

CSS bike program opens, police catch thieves

During the first week of the fall semester, the Temple Police claim they have been aggressively patrolling bike racks around campus since the new prevention initiatives were implemented on Aug. 26.

Last Wednesday, Temple Police stopped two incidents of bike thefts by the use of surveillance cameras around the campus. At 4:31 a.m., one male suspect was observed by camera taking a bike in front of James Beasley School of Law. The suspect rode away with three other accomplices on bikes as the police gave chase, but was later apprehended and the bikes were confiscated for further evidence.

Another incident occurred at 10 p.m., when a female student reported her bike missing from the 1800 block of North Broad Street, on the north side of McGonigal Hall.

Based on video footage, the theft took place about a half hour before the report came in. Police located and apprehended the suspect at the corner of Woodstock Street and Montgomery Avenue, and charged him with theft.

“The quick action of the dispatchers viewing our videos assisted greatly in apprehending bike thieves,” Leone said.

In addition to traditional patrols and video surveillance CSS created a new bike registration program over the Internet. The idea was to make it easier for bike commuters to register their rides, Leone said.

“We encourage our students to visit our website,” Charles J. Leone, the deputy director of Campus Security Safety said via email. “Our department have registered over 150 bikes since Monday.”

Once a student has registered their bicycle, they can take a trip to the main headquarters at the 1100 block of West Montgomery Avenue, across from Sullivan Hall, where an officer will place a registration sticker on the bike and receive a free U-Lock.
