Snow shuts down Main Campus

In a Temple Alert sent out 6:30 a.m. Friday morning, administration announced that non-essential services at the university would be closed Jan. 3 due to the winter storm that dumped heavy snowfall on much of the Philadelphia region and Northeast United States Thursday night.

Temple University Hospital, physicians practices, Campus Safety Services and facilities and operations workers would remain on duty Friday, a full report on the university’s website stated.

Due to winter break, normal class operations were not affected. The report said that employees should not report to work unless their services are deemed essential by their supervisors.

According to Philly.com, 7 inches of snow fell throughout most of the region, including 9 inches at Philadelphia International Airport. Philadelphia Public Schools were closed Friday and Saturday, but SEPTA regional rail, subway and bus routes remained open, although with delays. A state of emergency was declared in nearby New Jersey.

The last time Temple closed due to weather was in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy shut down campus for two days.

Facing emergency, Temple remains open

It’s beginning to look like something you’d read in the satirical Onion newspaper rather than a legit news source.

As of Sunday night, while a winter nor easter is passing through the Delaware Valley dumping what could be as much as a foot of snow on the ground, Temple University remains open, according to temple.edu/alert. Acknowledging that the city declared a weather emergency, Temple reports this, posted at 8:30 p.m.

A winter storm warning with the potential for several inches of snow has been issued for Philadelphia and surrounding communities. Temple University administrators are monitoring the situation and will make an evaluation early Monday morning regarding classes.

In other words, pack your books for your 8:40 class, as Fox 29’s John Bolaris just called a “hazardous situation” forming on the roads between 7 and 11 a.m. tomorrow.

The snow-day tradition at Temple is nothing new, so you shouldn’t be surprised. Bundle up out there.

DISCLAIMER: Of course, this is a intentionally satirical post but contains factual information from Temple’s Web site. Stay with Broad & Cecil for information on any potential Temple closing.

Keeping up with a snow-day tradition

It’s almost 7:15 a.m. Meteorologists have warned of wretched travel conditions, especially for the morning commute. Many area school districts have closed, or at the very least have called two hours late. Rain is falling and quickly turning to ice. Conditions are just bad.

In keeping with Temple tradition

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Weather notice:

The University will be open for business and holding
classes as scheduled, on Wednesday, January 28.

Nevermind the unnecessary comma. Temple successfully continues its streak of not offering a full snow day to students in exactly how many years? I can tell you it’s been at least four.

So get out those snowboots and pray you don’t slip and break your arm.
