L’shanah tovah!

To all the Jewish students, The Temple News wishes you a happy and healthy New Year this Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah marks the renewing of the Jewish calendar, and this year we enter into year 5772.

Services were held at Hillel, located at 1441 Norris St., and at Chabad, located at 1521 Dondill Place yesterday, where observers read scripts from the mahzor, the special prayer book for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and ate lots of good food, like apples and honey, pomegranates and challah. Holla!

Club rugby teams kick off season with wins

The men’s and women’s club rugby teams both picked up wins during the past weekend as their seasons are now underway.

The men’s team defeated West Chester 30-0 last Saturday with scoring from Brad Volm, John Shine, and John Waldron, who each had a try in the game.  Devin Sugg went 3-3 on penalty kicks and 3-3 on extra points to contribute a total of 15 points.  Zach McLellan and Volm each provided “huge tackles,” said club President Matthew Violette in an email.  “[The tackles] really got the crowd going.”

On the women’s side, the Owls defeated former division I team, Delaware, 12-5 last Saturday.  This year the Blue Hens are in division II with the Owls and coach Owen Jones said he used the game as a benchmark for the season.  Senior Kayleigh Dymond scored both tries for the club and junior Erin Langeheine made one conversion.

“Junior Kristin Shedaker was the heart and soul of the defense all day long,” Jones said in an email.  “Every single girl impressed and played very well.  It was a great result to start the fall season.”

Both club teams will be back in action this weekend.  The women’s team will travel to Drexel on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start at Vidas Field and the men’s team competes away at Shippensburg on Saturday.

HGSC celebrates fourth birthday

Time to celebrate! The Howard Gittis Student Center is turning four years old next week and is throwing itself a birthday party in its own honor!

Monday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Atrium (that’s the big lobby with the Help Desk), there will be games, prizes and (hopefully free) birthday cake. Everyone’s invited, so we recommend taking a little break out of the Monday morning blues for some sweet treats and a celebration. Just, please, don’t wear your birthday suit.

Widener University edging towards socialist learning factory, bans smoking

Choices are one of the reasons that make America great. But if you attend Widener University, your choices are limited, including not being allowed to smoke on campus. According to Philly.com, “Widener became the first four-year school in Pennsylvania to go not just smoke-free but tobacco-free, adopting a simple, stringent policy: No cigarettes, no cigars, no cigarillos, no pipes, no hookahs, no pinch between the cheek and gum.”

Here at Temple, that would never fly. I don’t smoke. In fact, I hate the smoke of others flying in my face, stinging my eyes and burning my nostrils. But to ban that freedom seems not only extraordinarily stringent, but silly.

But that is what choice is in America. The choice to study at research institutions, like Temple, and the choice to avoid socialist-like schools, like Widener.

RHA to hold Senate re-elections

Due to computing errors, Residence Hall Association will be holding re-elections for the Residence Hall Senate on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The new winners will be announced Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. on rhatemple.com.

According to an email sent to all residents, RHA reported electronic errors that may have botched the numbers. Ballots for the first election were previously cast online, so RHA will now be hosting re-elections across campus through a “hand-written ballot system located at each building’s front office.” Students must present their TUids “to ensure voting legitmacy.”
