Good Grief

61 years ago today, Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang made their newspaper debut in seven US newspapers. The original strip had only three characters: Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and Shermy. Snoopy made his first appearance two days later. The gang was eventually introduced to Linus, Lucy Van Pelt, Sally and Schroeder.

For the next 61 years readers of 2400 newspapers in 68 countries laughed along with Lucy as she pulled the football right out from under Charlie Brown’s feet at the last minute (did he ever kick that football?), and watched Linus carry around his security blanket.

Charles Schulz died in February of 2000, and the last strip printed on Feb. 12. But Joe Cool is still, and always will be, too cool for school.

Shooting at 18th and Jefferson

Several shots were fired Tuesday morning around 2am at 18th and Jefferson streets. They woke international business and finance major Bridget Quint, who then looked out her window at the action.

“I saw a black man, about 20, standing at the corner shooting up toward west Jefferson,” said Quint.

She saw the man fire three shots and then run down Jefferson toward Broad. Then, another man appeared and ran in the same direction as the shooter. Minutes later, three more men walked by.

“I did not see any of them with a gun, but I heard the one say he had a gun. He said he “shot him” but I don’t know who or what they were referring to,” said Quint.

The Philadelphia Police arrived shortly after. Quint saw no indication of injury or arrests.

No TU Alert or Advisory was sent out for the shooting.

“Now I imagine there are many crimes that go unknown to students, although these are student-populated areas. I guess I am kind of angry we didn’t get one, it makes me feel more separated from the campus,” said Quint.

Because this area is not in the Temple Police’s jurisdiction, they are not required to send alerts for incidents like this.

“That is outside the definition by law for issuance.  However, we do take incidents on a case-by-case bases depending on the circumstances and if there is a need for immediate action by members of our campus community. All said, although we have an excellent communication base, we may not always immediately know of an incident outside the campus area,” said Charles Leone, deputy director of Campus Safety Services.

New student-housing project secures funding

While some Philadelphians think it’s time for students to get outta town (or the neighborhoods near Main Campus, at least) others think it’s time to develop new housing for those good-for-nothin’ kids.

A new $20 million student-housing project at 10th and Diamond streets has secured financing to break ground in October, a report by the Philadelphia Business Journal states.

The new project by Orens Brothers Real Estate Inc., Mosaic Development Partners and Metamorphosis Community Development Corp. will have 92 units and 12,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, according to PBJ.

The project, near the Edberg-Olson football practice field, is expected to complete work next year.

Eagles activate Jarrett

For the first time since signing with the Eagles, former student Jaiquawn Jarrett has been activated for play today for the first time since joining in light of several players inactivity. Brooklyn-native Jarrett has an edge over corner Curtis Marsh, from Utah State, according to coach Andy Reid.

The Birds currently lead the game against the San Francisco 49ers at 23-17 with just 9:30 left in the 4th quarter.

Adam DiMichele signs with the Philadelphia Soul

Former Temple quarterback Adam DiMichele is returning to Philly after signing with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League today.

After his final season with the Owls in 2008, DiMichelle bounced around from preseason appearances with the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football league to playing on the Calgary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. Last year, DiMichele was the MVP of the Southern Indoor Football League, where he threw 91 touchdown passes as a member of the Erie Explosion.

Fun Fact: The Explosion played 13 games in the 2011 season, meaning DiMichele averaged seven passing touchdowns per game.

Wear Pink Next Home Game!

This afternoon at the Bell Tower, girls were selling $15 pink t-shirts for tomorrow’s football game at the Lincoln Financial Field against Toledo. Temple students can get tickets for free, and in hopes of spreading breast cancer awareness, $5 tickets are available for non-Temple attendees wearing pink.

All of the profits of the t-shirts go toward breast cancer awareness.

Cheese Busz opens for business

The Cheese Busz, located on 13th and Norris streets right outside Tyler School of Art, offers speciality grilled cheese sandwhiches on white or wheat bread. A combo with fries (sweet potato fries are available) and a drink cost $7. The speciality options look more like paninis than grilled cheeses, but mine was delicious nonetheless.

NOMNOMNOM

Multimedia Editor Luis Rodriguez chows down on a burger from the Cheese Busz's brother, the Burger Busz, which is a few steps away if you're not a lover of all things cheesy. (Here's to hoping our friendship doesn't end with the publishing of this photo).

I got 99 problems…

and TU is one.

If you’re like me – and, God help you child if you are – you have a lot of problems. You have #whitegirlproblems, #princessprobz, #JAPdilemmas, #firstworldproblems, the list could go on. Well, let’s rejoice, fellow students, because a Twitter account has finally been dedicated to our biggest problem of all – TU problems.

Finally, there’s a place for all of us dissatisfied students to gripe about the condition of our campus, the train wreck so fondly referred to as Club Tech, Annie Weaves and, of course, the Hipsters.

The tweets are hilarious and oh-so-true. So the next time you find yourself around the corner from a shooting with no TU Alert in sight, don’t forget to tack on that #TUproblems hashtag at the end.
