Occupy Philly

The ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests, which began in New York City last week, have now reached Philly. Protesters assembled at the west side of City Hall beginning at 9 a.m. this morning, and have plans and permission to camp out there tonight. The protests are aimed at addressing economic inequality, corporate greed and the influence of congressional lobbyists among a slew of other social concerns. Since it’s start early this morning the crowd has continued to grow. Other cities have followed suit with protests and plans for demonstrations, including Washington, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and others. Check back at temple-news.com for ongoing coverage of the protests.

U Got Munchies hit and run

A vehicle hit the U Got Munchies truck and drove away today just after 1pm. The lunch truck shook a bit, and the collision seemed to injure one of the workers, according to a witness.

The witness speculated the male employee may have burnt his arm, while the other employee seemed unharmed.

The incident was not reported to Campus Safety Services.

Temple interested in Big East

The Temple/Big East Conference rumors are heating up.

Temple has notified the Big East that it would be interested in becoming a member in all sports, it has been reported. The university also told the Big East that it would accept a football-only invitation if offered.

This news comes after it was reported that the Big East talked about Temple in a meeting held on Sunday discussing schools who have expressed interested in joining the conference.

The Big East lost Pittsburgh and founding-member Syracuse to the Atlantic Coast Conference in September as a part of the recent wave of conference re-alignment going on throughout college sports. The Big East has been reportedly searching for potential candidates to fill the two vacancies ever since.

Mustache?

Google images of Fran Dunphy, Temple’s men’s basketball coach and in every image he has a mustache. However, USA Today reported that Fran Dunphy will shave his famed mustache in honor of former player Dionte Christmas’ graduation this Thursday.

Be sure to check out his new look during Temple’s 2011-2012 basketball season. The first home game is scheduled for December 3 against Central Michigan.

Cleared of murder conviction, Knox was represented by Temple alumnus

The captivating saga of Amanda Knox, a 24-year-old American who was convicted, and now cleared of, killing her roommate in Italy, came full circle when she returned home to Seattle, Wash. just minutes ago.

Knox was convicted of the Nov. 1, 2007 murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Knox, along with her boyfriend, Raffeale Sollecito, was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Kercher was a 21-year-old student from London.

However, a new investigation put the small amounts of DNA used as forensic evidence to doubt. The conviction was based heavily on circumstantial evidence.

Knox’s conviction was overturned yesterday, Oct. 3 by an Italian appeals court. Still, she was found guilty of slandering a man in Italy who she said was responsible for Kercher’s death. She was sentenced to three years (time already served) and a $29,000 fine.

In a separate trial, 24-year-old Rudy Guede was also convicted of the murder. Although his sentence was shortened, to 16 years, his conviction has not been overturned.

One of Knox’s lawyers, Theodore Simon, is a Philadelphia-based attorney and 1974 alumnus of Temple’s law school.

“Meredith was Amanda’s friend,” Simon said at a press conference held when Knox and her family landed in the United States.

Knox spoke briefly, thanking her supporters and defenders and stating plans to spend time with family.

Computer Love

You know I’ve been searching for someone
Who can share that special love with me
And your eyes have that glow
Could it be your face I see on my computer screen

Need a special girl (ooh yeah)
To share in my computer world
I no longer need a strategy
Thanks to modern technology

Yep, Zapp & Roger couldn’t have said it any better.

I’m not surprised that you can have a ‘fake girlfriend’ via the Internet. The service called fakegirlfriend.co, is a REAL service that will have your ‘ digital girlfriend’ call AND text you! I’m not sure about most people, but to me it seems more trouble than it’s worth. But, I am pretty sure many people will utilize the service out of pure desperation and to receive that attention they crave.
