Football practice facility to undergo expansion

The recommendation for a $9 million Edberg Olson football expansion project, which plans to expand the football practice facility at Diamond and 11th Streets, was approved at the Board of Trustees meeting today.

Edberg-Olson Hall and its complimentary practice field was designed for the football team’s use and dedicated in 2000. Currently, the 23,600-square-foot building contains team and coaches locker rooms, a weight room, a training room, equipment facilities, coach’s offices, observation balcony, a player’s lounge, computer lab, individual position meeting rooms and a theater-style team meeting room.

The funding and financing source is reportedly from the Plant Fund.

Bernard Pierce named to Maxwell Award Watch List

Junior running back Bernard Pierce is one of nine players in the country to be added to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which annually honors the College Player of the Year.

Pierce is currently leading the nation with 15 touchdowns and is the Owls’ and Mid-American Conference’s top scorer with 90 points after six games.  The Ardmore native has scored three or more touchdowns in four games this season and set a school record 41 career rushing touchdowns in the Owls’ last game Saturday against Ball State.

The 6-foot, 218-pound ball carrier picked up 121 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the Ball State game, recording more than 100 yards rushing for the fourth time this season and the 13th time in his career.  On the year, Pierce has rushed for 692 yards on 141 attempts.

“The goal is to get the guys who are you’re playmakers to touch the football as many times as you can,” said coach Steve Addazio in a press conference today.

Last year quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn was presented with the 74th Annual Maxwell Football Club’s honor. Newton led the No. 1 Tigers to a 22-19 win against No. 2 Oregon at the 2011 Bowl Series Championship National Championship game and to a 13-0 regular season record.

The voters for the Maxwell College Awards are NCAA Head College Football Coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club and sportswriters and sportscasters from across the nation.

College Republicans plan rally against Occupy Philadelphia

Temple College Republicans are planning to protest in front of Sen. Pat Toomey’s (R-Pa.) Philadelphia district office on Thursday, Oct. 13, against the Occupy Philadelphia demonstration taking place at City Hall, according to a Facebook event created by the group.

The Occupy protestors are reportedly protesting for their cause at the same location on Thursday.

“We cannot let them try to show up the Senator. He is doing the people’s business in Washington,” reads a post by the TCR Facebook page.

Another post indicates that if Occupy protestors do not rally in front of the senator’s office, that the rally against Occupy will move to City Hall.

“It’s time to let the media know that some people out there do support Capitalism,” the event page reads, presumably in response to some Occupy participants’ outward decrying of Capitalism.

The TCR plans to begin the rally at Toomey’s office near 17th and Market Streets at 3:30 p.m.

The Occupy demonstration, one of many that have popped up across the country in response to Occupy Wall Street, is a broad, inclusive rally against economic inequalities and wealth disparities.

Where do you stand on the issue? Do you support the rally against the rally? Sound off in the comment section.

Travel this summer

As I walked into my 10 a.m. class – which felt more like an 8 a.m. – this Monday morning, I was greeted with an outrageously loud and fast-paced-one-minute-Australian-accented lecture on a travel option for this summer 2012.

As snickers and smiles beamed across the lecture hall, I tried to understand what was being said about the International Student Volunteers program.

International Student Volunteers is a non-profit organization that combines “meaningful volunteer projects with action packed adventure travel.” Travel destinations include South Africa, Ecuador, Australia, New Zealand, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. A total of 50 students are being chosen from Temple to go on this trip.

Volunteer projects include sea turtle conservation, teaching English to children, home and community building, rainforest regeneration and elephant conservation projects.

While volunteering, adventure tours are offered, highlighting white water rafting and sea kayaking, SCUBA and snorkeling on exotic reefs, canyoning and cave exploration, horseback riding to hidden waterfalls and more.

Information meetings are being held this Thursday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. every hour on the hour in room 220 in the Student Center.

Check out the ISV website for more information.

Lattee Run

As usual, I came to club Tech to get some work done. For some  reason I had no inspiration nor motivation to get my editing session started so I did what any uninspired editor would do, walk away from the computer. My intentions were to get fresh air, grab a lattee from Saxby and hurry back to the computer lab before it was impossible to get a MAC. After one short phone call to a friend and two subway rides to Center City I found myself in Chinatown in the mist of a festival. We ended up staying for an hour and a half trying delicious foods and engaging in cultural experiences from all over. It was a beautiful night and positive energy all around. Now, I’m back at the Tech …and still no inspiration.

Occupying Philly?

Have you been down to City Hall yet today? If not, you should probably head down to see the hundreds of people “occupying” the concourse. You’ll be serenaded, offered snacks, and coaxed into staying for longer than you intended.

Farmer’s Market comes to Main Campus

Every Thursday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., a farmers market will come to Cecil B. Moore Avenue between Broad Street and Park Walk with what seems like endless options of fresh, local and affordable produce.

Some of the delicious treats available include home made pies, seasonal fruits & vegetables, mint leaves, pumpkins, flowers, jelly, jam, cider, beef jerky, honey, and organic dairy products.
