Members of Metamorphosis Community Development corporation, Mosaic Development Partners, and Orenes Brothers Real Estate Inc. are partnering in a $20 million student housing complex which is estimated to be completed by next August. The building will be named Diamond Green. Developers are attempting to attract football players by the building’s proximity to the practice field. The complex will include retail, a deli, a daycare center, a fitness center, and indoor parking. The community hopes that the project will bring students out of surrounding neighborhoods and into more designated student housing. Estimated rates are $650/month.
Exhibit organized for Philly Photo Day submissions
Friday, Oct. 28 was Philadelphia Photo Arts’ Philly Photo Day where everyone in the city was encouraged to take a picture of anything they wanted within city limits and to upload it onto the organization’s website. On Nov. 10 a Philly Photo Day Opening Reception will be held from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at 1400 N. American St. Every submission they received will be printed and hung at the exhibit.
Submissions are still being accepted on Philadelphia Photo Arts’ website through Monday, Oct. 31 at 11:59 p.m.
Architecture building taking shape
The university’s $10 million architecture building is taking shape in the courtyard near the Tyler School of Art.
The building, funded through the commonwealth, is expected to be complete in September 2012.
Studio space needed for the architecture program will be provided in the new building.
The project is one of many outlined in Temple’s 20/20 framework plan.
Louisville coach lobbies for Temple
Despite reports that Villanova has been trying to block Temple from transferring to the Big East, it appears that Temple has a friend within the Big East in Louisville.
Rick Pitino, Louisville men’s basketball coach, is actively lobbying to add Temple for both basketball and football in the Big East. Pitino expressed his opinion to Big East commissioner John Marinatto on Wednesday that the conference needs to expand its basketball profile to make up for the losses of basketball powerhouses Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which announced their departure for the Atlantic Coast Conference in September.
Pitino said that a combination of Temple’s rich basketball history and the recent success of the football team make it an attractive candidate for addition to the conference.
Snow delays Senior Day for women’s soccer
A ceremony and ensuing game to honor the women’s soccer team’s five seniors before the match up with St. Bonaventure has been post-poned and relocated due to inclement weather. The game originally scheduled to be played at Ambler Sports Complex is about to kickoff at 2 p.m. at LaSalle’s turf field at McCarthy Stadium (20th and Olney Avenue).
Seniors to be honored include forward Niki Conn, defenders Samantha Farlow, Tiia Kuokka, and Amanda Vogelman and forward Becky Bently. The Owls are coming off their first win in four games after defeating Duquesne 1-0 on Friday.
TTN celebrates Halloween together
The Temple News staff celebrated Halloween this year with a costume party on Friday, Oct. 28. There were a lot of lions roaming around the party, a Burger King, and a garden gnome. The list continues, but nothing topped Brian Dzenis’ costume, as he was clad in wig and skirt. See photos below for some laughs.
Bill Clinton Cancels Temple Appearance; Student Center Gets Occupied
Former President Bill Clinton cancelled his scheduled appearance, for Mayor Nutter’s campaign kick off, due to weather. Mayor Nutter also canceled his appearance.
Protestors from Occupy Philadelphia who were there as part of a ‘silent march’ made the decision to occupy the Student Center. The occupiers first attempt was stopped by police who guarded the doors of the Student Center. Occupiers announced they were going to the Paley Library instead, on their way there police advised them they had clearance to the Student Center.
Occupiers are using their time in the Student Center for discussion.
DC Artist Wale Visits Temple
Today in front of the Student Center DC rap artist Wale meet with fans. As his tour bus drove down 13th street students crowded the bus and ran a quick lap down Polett Walk and the artist quickly returned back to his tour bus. Wale was said to come today around 1pm but actually showed up at 4pm leaving a lot of anxious and even angry fans.
The Onion Comes to Temple
The Onion, a satirical news organization, will have three of its writers visit Temple on Thursday, November 3. The event is free and will take place in Mitten Hall’s Great Court.
Mat Kearney comes to TLA
In support of his third major label release, “Young Love,” Nashville singer/songwriter, Mat Kearney, will be performing this Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia. Tickets can be purchased at http://tlaphilly.com/event/020046C6CB218C2D
