Good Grief

61 years ago today, Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang made their newspaper debut in seven US newspapers. The original strip had only three characters: Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and Shermy. Snoopy made his first appearance two days later. The gang was eventually introduced to Linus, Lucy Van Pelt, Sally and Schroeder.

For the next 61 years readers of 2400 newspapers in 68 countries laughed along with Lucy as she pulled the football right out from under Charlie Brown’s feet at the last minute (did he ever kick that football?), and watched Linus carry around his security blanket.

Charles Schulz died in February of 2000, and the last strip printed on Feb. 12. But Joe Cool is still, and always will be, too cool for school.

Cheese Busz opens for business

The Cheese Busz, located on 13th and Norris streets right outside Tyler School of Art, offers speciality grilled cheese sandwhiches on white or wheat bread. A combo with fries (sweet potato fries are available) and a drink cost $7. The speciality options look more like paninis than grilled cheeses, but mine was delicious nonetheless.

NOMNOMNOM

Multimedia Editor Luis Rodriguez chows down on a burger from the Cheese Busz's brother, the Burger Busz, which is a few steps away if you're not a lover of all things cheesy. (Here's to hoping our friendship doesn't end with the publishing of this photo).

I got 99 problems…

and TU is one.

If you’re like me – and, God help you child if you are – you have a lot of problems. You have #whitegirlproblems, #princessprobz, #JAPdilemmas, #firstworldproblems, the list could go on. Well, let’s rejoice, fellow students, because a Twitter account has finally been dedicated to our biggest problem of all – TU problems.

Finally, there’s a place for all of us dissatisfied students to gripe about the condition of our campus, the train wreck so fondly referred to as Club Tech, Annie Weaves and, of course, the Hipsters.

The tweets are hilarious and oh-so-true. So the next time you find yourself around the corner from a shooting with no TU Alert in sight, don’t forget to tack on that #TUproblems hashtag at the end.

Steve Addazio needs you

Yesterday, a video was posted to Vimeo featuring head football coach Steve Addazio asking all cherry-and-white fans to come out on Oct. 1 to the Linc for our MAC opener against the Toledo Rockets.

Bring your mom, your dad, your boyfriend, your dog. We don’t care, just go to the game. Kickoff is at noon.

L’shanah tovah!

To all the Jewish students, The Temple News wishes you a happy and healthy New Year this Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah marks the renewing of the Jewish calendar, and this year we enter into year 5772.

Services were held at Hillel, located at 1441 Norris St., and at Chabad, located at 1521 Dondill Place yesterday, where observers read scripts from the mahzor, the special prayer book for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and ate lots of good food, like apples and honey, pomegranates and challah. Holla!

Free Coffee!

Tomorrow 7-11 will be offering its customers free coffee from 7-11am! Run in before your classes and get your free cup. There’s a store on Liacourse Walk and another on Cecil B. Moore Ave. across from the Liacouras Center.

Widener University edging towards socialist learning factory, bans smoking

Choices are one of the reasons that make America great. But if you attend Widener University, your choices are limited, including not being allowed to smoke on campus. According to Philly.com, “Widener became the first four-year school in Pennsylvania to go not just smoke-free but tobacco-free, adopting a simple, stringent policy: No cigarettes, no cigars, no cigarillos, no pipes, no hookahs, no pinch between the cheek and gum.”

Here at Temple, that would never fly. I don’t smoke. In fact, I hate the smoke of others flying in my face, stinging my eyes and burning my nostrils. But to ban that freedom seems not only extraordinarily stringent, but silly.

But that is what choice is in America. The choice to study at research institutions, like Temple, and the choice to avoid socialist-like schools, like Widener.

It’s Monday — Time to Party

Posters have been taped on the sidewalk around the Bell Tower and Student Center for Rover: a traveling dance party.

This event occurs Monday nights from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at a different location each week. To add to the bizarre fun, to enter you must know the secret password for the event.

DJ Royale, DJ Lee Jones and MC Tom Charles are bringing their blend of musical genres for the hottest dance party every Monday for young adults.

Tonight the party is at Walnut Room, 1709 Walnut St., and the password: “Miss Piggy is the original Lady Gaga.”

For more information on locations and the night’s secret password go to roverphilly.blogspot.com.

TTN’s target audience = rabbits?

TTN's biggest critic

As Chief Copy Editor at The Temple News, it’s only fitting that my furry son, Pancake, was trained to be a grammar guru and AP Style nerd. He let’s me know if he found an error by chewing the paper to shreds.

Pancake is anxiously awaiting the Lunchies edition of The Temple News, which comes out this Tuesday. He’ll probably feel differently when he finds out Main Campus has yet to establish a gourmet carrot truck.

(Yes, I just made a blog post about my rabbit. Yes, this is real life.)
