This Week’s Missed Connections

craigslist.jpg

We’ve only got 4 Liacouras Love Affairs this week, a fact that’s leaving me bored and blue-balled. C’mon love birds, I know many of you are settling down with that fall fling, but don’t get too cozy. I’ve got a job to do— and you know there’s always room for a little on the side.

Saw you on Montgomery (TU) – m4w – 19

Girl wearing the long teal shirt with gray spotted hoodie. I saw you today from across the street and thought you were a bombshell. Maybe we can talk more and get to know each other.

Next time, show her you care by darting across 6 lanes of heavy traffic.

broad line going to south st. a few weeks ago – w4m – 19

I was the girl in the plaid jacket, tiny black skirt and bright yellow shoes.. Pink beret.

You were sitting to the left of me, with a few friends, and said I was cute.

I replied with “I like your scarfe.”

Nothing says romance like a trip on the Orange line.

Pro-choice vs. Pro-life at the Bell Tower today

feminist2.jpg

The Temple University Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance handed out neon pink signs today by the Bell Tower that read “Attention Students: Please ignore the LARGE signs clogging up our campus. It’s easier to avoid the propaganda and just continue to class. Thank You.”

Close to 20 students stood in front of the Bell Tower, donned in pink shirts and bandannas. They held up signs saying “Real men support choice” and Keep Bush out of my Bush.”

Just across the way at 12th and Berks stood numerous large signs that showed support for the pro-life movement. The signs showed graphic images of aborted fetuses and compared the pro-choice movement to genocide.

Life in the Bike Lane: Rack ‘em up

Yo, bikers! Today is the day I know you’ve all been waiting for. Be sure to stay tuned each week for a new and exciting look into the world of Philly biking. So lock up your single-speed and unroll your right pant leg, ’cause we all know that two wheels are better than four.

There’s seven weeks left in the semester. It’s been cold and rainy lately and you’ve had to take SEPTA to class. Not to mention, you’ve gained five pounds just from drinking too many Pumpkin Spiced Lattes at Starbucks just to stay up and study for that Econ midterm. Usually around this time of year, life can really be a drag.

But look on the bright side, we have something to get excited about–New bike racks! These four-foot-long steel beauties have been cropping up all over campus in recent weeks. In the beginning of the semester, one was added across from the Student Center on 12th and Montgomery. The TECH Center has also received some bike rack lovin’. Three new ones have been placed in close proximity to Tuttleman, my favorite being the one two steps (literally) away from the door–great for when I’m running late to that umm, 10:10 that I only have on Thursdays. Ooh, and today I noticed one brand new silver gem outside of Annenberg Hall. It looked lonely sans bicycles and was still all wrapped up in yellow caution tape. I bet you all can’t wait to deflower that little guy.

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about these racks. Temple did something pretty cool for the bikers. So stop locking up to the fences and show the racks some love. I’m sure both will thank you.

This Week’s Missed Connections

craigslist.jpg

Apologies can’t make up for missing last weeks, uhm, missed connections, but I can say this: We’ve got quite a few more to showcase than usual, and I’ve changed things up a little bit (see below). This week, the great debate between the pal wink and pervy wink continues, it’s mighty lonely aboard SEPTA, and we’re all spending a little too much time at the Tech Center.

Lick this:

Tech Center Right Now – m4w

i am sitting right across from you. just look up again. email me back.
I bet this caused about 63 really embarrassing moments.

Outside Annenberg – m4w – 22

You said I always look handsome as I was heading for class at 3:40. Just thought that was real nice! Thanks for makin’ my day :]
Aw, cute. Someone walked to class with their mom this afternoon.

Anthropology lecture. Red and black bike. – w4m – 18

You’re in my anthropology lecture hall. I’ve never spoke to you but you ride a black and red fixed Bianchi to class. And you always wear those cute little hats and glasses. You probably haven’t noticed me but I think you look like you’re real fun and we should get lunch sometime or something.
Note to self: Wear more cute little hats.

A history of the Baptist Temple

mlk_baptist_temple.jpeg

The blog Necessity For Ruins has an awesome post about the history of the Baptist Temple. Although The Temple News covered this a few weeks ago NFR takes more historical approach, including the above photo of Dr. Martin Luther King and details on Russell Conwell’s role:

When Conwell arrived from Boston in Philadelphia in 1882, his charge was to lead the congregation of the Grace Baptist Temple at 12th and Berks Sts. With his captivating style of self-help Christianity, Conwell appealed to Philadelphia’s droves of aspiring workers. According to Temple apochrypha he began teaching hungry students in the basement of the Grace Baptist Temple. When the Baptist Temple was constructed in 1891, Conwell moved his congregation–and his students–to the new facility.

NFR even revives the notion that former President Peter Liacouras purposefully left the Baptist Temple in decay.

Cut to the Chase: Marie takes a tumble!

Live television has always amazed me. It’s such a common occurrence, but unscripted events rarely happen during live broadcasts.

Enter: Marie Osmond.

On Monday night’s Dancing with the Stars, Marie finished her dance, in which she seemed a little out of sync, and as she was listening to the judges’ reaction, she collapses. Live.

“Alright, we’re going to take a commercial break, and we’ll be right back, and, uh, we’ll be right back after this,” host (and my idol) Tom Bergeron said nervously as he bent down seeing if Marie was alright.

The camera flashed to head judge Len Goodman nodding in agreement, then back to the unconscious Marie on the ground with Tom and dancing partner Jonathan, and finally to an awkwardly silent pan of the audience fading into the commercial.

I didn’t see the live event take place. In fact, I’m ashamed to say I didn’t find out until scanning CNN.com nearly 23 hours later, quickly followed by a YouTube visit. But, and I can say this since everyone is completely fine and healthy, the video is hilarious.

Now on T-N.com: The secrets behind Greek life and a look at Outfest

070111052251DQ.jpg

Just recently added to Temple-News.com:

Kayla Hilliard covers Philly Outfest as well as adding to our previous coverage of the Queer Cafe.

John Dailey lets us know the inside life of rushing a fraternity:

I awoke the next morning with a slight headache, but I didn’t mind because I made some new friends and learned a little bit about fraternities. Another week went by and I didn’t hear from them much until one day I was strolling in the Student Center and I got another text inviting me to an “event.” I had no idea what rushing is all about at the time, so of course the concept was a foreign one.

Becca Bleznak does the same for sorority life.

Take a few steps beyond Broad and Cecil B. Moore. In the midst of Temple’s aggressive expansion which stretches far into the surrounding North Philadelphia community lies an often overlooked yet enduring fixture. It serves both people of the community and students well: The Mecca Barber & Beauty Salon.

Here’s a small glimpse into the world that’s usually on (sometimes in) your way to the IBC, Dunkin Donuts, City View, or any of those other fancy shops at Avenue North.

Cut to the Chase: Top 10 All-Time Game Show Hosts

Bob Barker.gifCry me a river and spin me a wheel.

In this week’s Temple News, I listed my top 10 game show hosts of all time, all based on my bountiful experience in the game show world.

My grandmother taught me well. It was in her house that I learned of the Game Show Network, now GSN, and I couldn’t be more thankful.

However, GSN put out their own list of the top 10 game show hosts back in January, and while we share some hosts,

Stover’s list:

  1. Bob Barker
  2. Pat Sajak
  3. Richard Dawson
  4. Tom Bergeron
  5. Gene Rayburn
  6. Alan Ludden
  7. Dick Clark
  8. Anne Robinson
  9. Regis Philbin
  10. Ben Stein

GSN’s list:

  1. Bob Barker
  2. Gene Rayburn
  3. Alex Trebek
  4. Monty Hall
  5. Richard Dawson
  6. Regis Philbin
  7. Bill Cullen
  8. Chuck Woolery
  9. Pat Sajak
  10. Bob Eubanks

My brief analysis of GSN’s list: Chuck Woolery was put on the list out of pity, being that he is a current employee of GSN. Monty Hall contributed very little to the game show host character. Alex Trebek is simply repulsive, even moreso since he is No. 3. And, the undisputed No. 1 is Bob Barker, right where he should be.

But, as comments on the article at temple-news.com already show, there are disagreements. I want to know them. I want to argue them.

Get your friends and family involved, Chasers. Post away.
