Obama picks Temple to advance

President Barack Obama filled out the official Presidential Bracket today, and he gave the Temple Owls a shot.

Obama picked Temple — and fellow city contender Villanova — to advance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which begins this week.

The good news ends after the first round, though, as Obama predicts Temple will not defeat its second-round contender (who, pending a major upset, will be Syracuse).

Villanova, he said, will make it to the Sweet 16. But UNC will take it all.

Owls earned No. 11 seed

Following yesterday’s Atlantic 10 Championship and automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, the Temple Owls learned they are the 11th-seeded team in the south region.

They’ll face No. 6 Arizona State Friday in the first-round game in Miami.

Check out Tuesday’s edition of The Temple News (and get updates on temple-news.com) for extended coverage of the Owls’ championship win in the A-10 and the march to Miami.

Blogging from Phils Spring Training: The Boo

Boooooooooooooo!!!!

*pause*

BOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

That’s what I’m used to hearing. That’s the sound of Philadelphia fans: the sound of the boo. That means, in most cases, that unlike most fans out there, we care. Now it’s no secret that there are two types of people that boo during games: knowledgeable fans (the ones that care), and drunk idiots. Knowledgeable fans are self descriptive: they want to win and understand what it takes. If…

Verizon needs a copy editor

Temple fans at the St. Joe’s game tonight (in which the Owls won in their final home game of the season, 68-59) got a special treat from Verizon — a cardstock sign to wave at the opposition.

However, the folks at Verizon made a slight mistake that may offend Owls fans… The note at the bottom of the sign reads:

Place your hand in the pocket, hold your sign up high, and CHEER THE HAWKS ON!

Regardless, it was a nice gesture by Verizon, no?

Sadness for Eagles fans starts on first day of free agency

Eagles fans were probably upset when the Denver Broncos signed backup (as long as Brian Westbrook is feeling okay) running back Correll Buckhalter from the Eagles, leaving their backfield hanging by a thread.

They were probably a little more upset when they learned that the Washington Redskins signed defensive end Albert Haynesworth to a 7-year $100 million deal.

But they are surely livid after learning that the Broncos struck again and swiped a key component of Eagles history.

Fight! Fight! Fight!

…and we’ll fight! fight! fight!, for the Cherry and the White, for the Cherry and the White, we’ll fight! fight! fight!

The Big 5, or City 6, has essentially become the last two left: Villanova and Temple. The Wildcats and Owls are the only two Philadelphia teams that have good realistic chances at making college basketball’s post-season: the NCAA tournament. While ‘Nova is going to get in for sure – ranked #12 in the land, a 22-5 record, 10-5 in the insane Big East – Temple still has work to do. But for anyone who thinks that they aren’t good enough, and for anyone who thinks they don’t have the pieces to make it to the ‘Dance’ again, take notes on the following…

Temple fans treated to Dionte Christmas bobblehead

Temple basketball fans attending today’s game against St. Bonaventure were treated to something special: a bobblehead of Temple’s own Dionte Christmas.  The first 3,000 fans received the free bobblehead of the Atlantic Ten Conference’s leading scorer.

This must be quite an honor for Christmas, the senior gaurd, who is in his final season with the Owls and will likely be drafted into the NBA after this season.

The ADD Show Super Bowl parties are en fuego

Yeah, uh, slight mishap when I went to make the wings for the Super Bowl party for my blog, The ADD Show. I was getting the oil ready to deep fry those bad boys when the other half of The ADD Show, Aaron Gottlieb, alerted me that there was a significant amount of smoke coming from the pot. When I removed the lid, as John Madden would say, “BOOM!” It blew up in flames.

After learning pretty quickly that blowing on the fire wasn’t the route to take (in fact, it made the flames at least double in size), we came up with a better solution. And water isn’t a much better solution.

Yes, the fire department had to be called after I tossed the pot of flaming vegetable oil out of my second-story window.

No, this did not stop me from cooking the wings when we were all allowed back inside. It’s all about priorities.

Anyway, there’s more to the story. Not only are wings just that important, but The ADD Show rated all the commercials – that’s right – all of them.

Diamond Gems gain new dancer

surprise

The Diamond Gems simply looked different at Saturday’s men’s basketball game versus Charlotte. The Owls scored a victory. The gems scored an additional dancer.

Many fans weren’t sure if that person on the court was part of the Gems’ act or not. During a time-out dance, an enthusiastic (and perhaps intoxicated?) patron ran on the court and danced. The moves weren’t bad, which made spectators question the dancer’s authenticity. He kept pace with the Gems, swerving in and out of them. At one point, he actually had the opportunity to crawl through the legs of one lucky Gem.

Enter Temple’s finest. With little to no resistance, the newest Diamond Gem became a Diamond in the Rough with Temple’s Police.
