Temple to have endzones painted at the Linc

Turns out “Paint the Linc Cherry” is more than just a marketing slogan from Temple athletics as for the first time ever, Temple will have the endzones painted Cherry for Saturday’s game against. One end will say “Temple” and the other will say  “Owls.”

In what looks to be the signature home game off the season as 50,000 tickets have currently been sold, with 10,000 of them being to students, athletics is pulling out all the stops to accommodate the increased attendance. In this week’s issue, deputy athletic directer Eric Roedl told The Temple News that its going to cost the athletic department $300,000 to host the Nittany Lions.

When Penn State last visited the Linc in 2007, it set program record for attendance with a total of 69,000 fans in the stands.

Penn State game to air nationally on ESPN

The Owls’ upcoming football game against Penn State will be broadcast on national television.

The game is set to kick off Saturday at noon on the Owls’ home turf at Lincoln Financial Field. ESPN will broadcast the game live nationally, with Dave LaMont commenting and Ray Bentley providing color analysis.

Saturday’s matchup will represent the sixth meeting between these two teams in the past six years and the second one for the Owls at home.

The Nittany Lions have won all five games in the most recent series and haven’t lost to the Owls since 1941.

Temple vs. Akron resumes after rain delay

The football team was originally scheduled to play Akron at 6:30 p.m. today at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field in Akron, Ohio, but a rain delay forced the players and fans to seek shelter with about six minutes of action left in the first quarter.

The game has recently resumed and can be seen on ESPN3.com.   Before stoppage, the game was scoreless, but Akron had the edge in total offensive yardage with 87 yards.  The Zips had a total of 90 offensive yards last week against Ohio State.

Owls’ junior running back Bernard Pierce had three rushes for 13 yards in the quarter before the delay.  The Owls had a total of 6 plays on offense for 23 yards.

Women’s crew coach recalls time as 9/11 first responder

Jason Read, the new women’s crew coach, who was hired on Aug. 22 was featured on CBS Philly’s website and on KYW Newsradio today where he talked about serving as a first responder on Sept. 11.

“The images that we see don’t give the situation that really was,” [Read said].  “We’re talking about 50 acres — enormous buildings.  Hundreds and hundreds of stories, pancaked.  Collapsed.  Within seconds.”

Free PSU vs. Temple football tickets available tonight

The first 1,000 students to attend the Owls volleyball game tonight at 7 p.m. in McGonigle Hall will receive free student tickets to the Penn State football game on Sept. 17.  The volleyball team will face Rider in a non-conference game after competing at the Big 5 Tournament last weekend.  The Owls posted a 1-2 record at the tournament, which brought their overall season record to 2-3.

Pierce named MAC Offensive Player of the Week

It didn’t take long for junior running back Bernard Pierce to make an impact on the Owls’ 2011 season.

Pierce was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his effort against Villanova in the Mayor’s Cup last week. Pierce rushed for 147 yards and tied a career high with three touchdowns in the Owls’ dominating 42-7 defeat of the Wildcats.

“The last two years, [my performance in the Mayor’s Cup] didn’t really go over,” Pierce said in a teleconference on Friday. “I really think I set the tone for the rest of the season.”
This was the fifth MAC Offensive Player of the Week award of Pierce’s collegiate career.

Women’s basketball team to hold scout team tryouts

Are you a full-time male student with dreams of being juked out of his socks by Kristen McCarthy? Well, your dreams may come true. The women’s basketball team is looking for students to play on its scout team for the 2011-2012 season. Scout team players will participate in drills alongside the players and simulate Temple opponents in practice.

Football captains announced

The football team announced its captains for the 2011 season today.  Three of four seniors named to the leadership role start for the Owls’ defense: offensive lineman John Palumbo, linebacker Tahir Whitehead, defensive ends Morkeith Brown and Adrian Robinson.

“I think from spring ball going into camp, we looked very good out there,” Brown said of the team at the media press conference on Monday.  “Everybody’s ready to play.”

The Owls are just three hours from kicking off their season opener at 7 p.m. against Villanova at Lincoln Financial Field.

 

Football and men’s basketball to be broadcast on 1210 AM WHPT

1210 AM WPHT, the longtime radio home of Temple athletics, have expanded their athletic coverage to incude broadcasts of the entire football and men’s basketball seasons.

“We are excited to be able to not only continue, but strengthen our relationship with WPHT,” Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw said. “This deal enables fans in the greater Delaware Valley and beyond the ability to follow Temple Athletics on one of the strongest commercial radio stations in the country.”

The multi-year agreement will go into effect this Thursday night when the Owls kick off their football season against the University of Villanova in the Mayor’s Cup at Lincoln Financial Field, and will extend throughout the 2011-12 athletic season.

KYW Newsradio announcer Harry Donahue will do play-by-play for both football and men’s basketball. Former Owls quarterback Steve Joachim will do color analysis for football, while Assistant Athletic Director John Baum will provide color analysis for men’s basketball.
