CSS bike program opens, police catch thieves

During the first week of the fall semester, the Temple Police claim they have been aggressively patrolling bike racks around campus since the new prevention initiatives were implemented on Aug. 26.

Last Wednesday, Temple Police stopped two incidents of bike thefts by the use of surveillance cameras around the campus. At 4:31 a.m., one male suspect was observed by camera taking a bike in front of James Beasley School of Law. The suspect rode away with three other accomplices on bikes as the police gave chase, but was later apprehended and the bikes were confiscated for further evidence.

Another incident occurred at 10 p.m., when a female student reported her bike missing from the 1800 block of North Broad Street, on the north side of McGonigal Hall.

Based on video footage, the theft took place about a half hour before the report came in. Police located and apprehended the suspect at the corner of Woodstock Street and Montgomery Avenue, and charged him with theft.

“The quick action of the dispatchers viewing our videos assisted greatly in apprehending bike thieves,” Leone said.

In addition to traditional patrols and video surveillance CSS created a new bike registration program over the Internet. The idea was to make it easier for bike commuters to register their rides, Leone said.

“We encourage our students to visit our website,” Charles J. Leone, the deputy director of Campus Security Safety said via email. “Our department have registered over 150 bikes since Monday.”

Once a student has registered their bicycle, they can take a trip to the main headquarters at the 1100 block of West Montgomery Avenue, across from Sullivan Hall, where an officer will place a registration sticker on the bike and receive a free U-Lock.

Ambler safe after alerts of armed individual, CSS says.

Temple’s Ambler Campus is safe and students are advised to continue their schedules as normal after reports of an armed individual in a parking lot were deemed not credible, Deputy Director of Campus Safety Services Charlie Leone said.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, Leone said an administrator at the campus offices received a phone call warning of an armed individual in the parking lot. Temple and Upper Dublin Township Police investigated and found no such individual.

The campus was not locked down, Leone said, and no alert was issued to students until a general TU Advisory was issued throughout the student body notifying them of the incident shortly after 3 p.m.

While no official lockdown was issued, Leone said there was unofficial communication between the Ambler staff about staying inside.

Leone said that the campus was never in danger and CSS only chose to issue the alert after they received numerous calls from students who had heard rumors and inquired whether it was safe to return to class.

Family Suing Two Bars For Temple Grad’s Death

Family members of a deceased insurance executive and Temple graduate filed a civil lawsuit last Thursday against his assailants and two bars that were allegedly serving drinks to them before the incident, according to an article in The Philadelphia Daily News.

According to the article, the suit accused two Center City bars, G Lounge in Rittenhouse Square and Lucy’s Hat Shop in Old City, of violating state law by serving the assailants Kenneth Enriquez-Santiago, Steven Ferguson and Felix Carrillo drinks after they were already showing visible signs of being drunk on the night of Jan. 11, 2012.

Later on in the early hours of Jan. 12, the three assailants were getting out of a vehicle when they proceeded to attack Kevin Kless, 23, who was trying to catch a cab with his girlfriend, leaving him unconscious and dying on the ground at the 400 block of Chestnut Street.

All three men pled guilty for the beating. Ferguson received a five to 10 year sentence for third-degree murder, while Santiago will only serve two to five years due to his plea arrangement for a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Carrillo also pled guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and is serving a two to five year sentence.

At time of press, there are no new details of the lawsuit pending for the three assailants and the establishments that were involved in the incident.

Bergman named special assistant to the president

Vice President Bill Bergman, a former deputy Philadelphia Police commissioner who has been at Temple since 1996, was appointed special assistant to the president by President Neil Theobald earlier this month.

“Bill’s many years of service at Temple will make him an invaluable resource as we move Temple forward,” Theobald said in a statement. “I’m pleased he has agreed to return to the Executive Office of President in this role.”

Bergman came to Temple after 27 years with the Philadelphia Police Department to oversee the university’s public safety operation, according to University Communications. He rose through the ranks and eventually became former President Ann Weaver Hart’s chief of staff for two years.

“Temple has been an important part of my life,” said Bergman in a statement through University Communications. “I look forward to working with President Theobald to make sure that the university continues to be a vital part of this city and the commonwealth.”
