Move over, Center City.
Less-fancy (but albeit up-and-coming, if you will) ‘hoods Kensington, Fishtown and Port Richmond are holding their own Restaurant Week beginning May 1. Twelve restaurants throughout the areas, which are located just northeast of Northern Liberties, will offer fixed price menus or $10 to $30 entrees during the week.
Haute hipster hangout Johnny Brenda’s at Frankford and Girard avenues on the edge of Fishtown and the ever-exalted Ida Mae’s Bruncherie in Port Richmond are two participants in the event.
From Main Campus, Fishtown, Port Richmond and Kensington are accessible by the Girard Avenue trolley and the Market-Frankford El (SEPTA Blue Line). And they’d be a cheap, quick cab ride if public transportation just isn’t your style.
According to this nifty, interactive infographic, which was composed using local area unemployment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there have been 4,197,371 jobs lost nationwide since February 2008 as of February 2009.
The data shown for each month on the Slate.com map show the number of net job gains in blue or losses in red, as compared to those the same month a year earlier.
While the most up-to-date stat for Philadelphia county (610 jobs lost since February 2008) isn’t as extreme that of some other major citys on the map (take L.A. county with 230,028 jobs lost since February 2008), the data varies from month to month, as just a month earlier in January 2009, Philly lost 2,503 jobs since the year before.
If numbers aren’t your thing, press the green ‘play’ button and let the blue-turned-red map speak for itself. Yikes.
The man who can successfully talk about nothing is returning to his stand-up roots and coming to Philadelphia.

Ironic that the headline of Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer was “A Measure of Relief.”
Philadelphia Newspapers L.L.C., which not only owns the Inky but also the Daily News and philly.com, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today. The company faces $390 million of debt. TTN has learned an e-mail has been sent to staff members.
The company attributes “advertising downturn, rising costs for newsprint, and the migration of readers to the Internet” as causes for the profit loss.
However, the filing will not affect the daily production of the paper. A restructuring of the organization is expected.
The Real World is hosting an open casting call for its 23rd season on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Raven Lounge (1718 Sansom St.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This time, though, producers are looking for a particular type of applicant:
“We’d love to include a person who is physically challenged, an individual struggling with weight issues, someone whose family or themselves are dealing with the immigrant-to citizenship process, an individual who is coming out of the foster care system, someone who is currently grieving over the loss of a spouse or significant other, or a cast member who wants to bring the spotlight of The Real World to a cause or social issue they care deeply about.”
All others may apply, as well. Have a headshot ready.
It was one of the biggest scandals that the Reading Terminal market was ever involved in.
Not that there were many scandals…
Rick’s Steaks, which was ousted from Reading Terminal last year for poor relations with the board, has found a more upscale home. Its new location is under construction at the Bellevue on South Broad Street.
The menu is the same, according to the Inquirer’s (and Temple’s) Michael Klein, but will expand with soups and breakfast items.
Maybe the ousting from the Terminal isn’t so bad for Rick’s, after all.
Cosmopolitan magazine thinks so. While wandering aimlessly around the Internet … not surfing cosmopolitan.com, of course, I happened to stumble upon the steamy women’s magazine’s “Hot City Guide,” in which Philadelphia, along with every cliche city and some not-so-hot cities (Jackson Hole, Colo., anyone?), makes the cut as one of the “hottest” cities in the U.S.
This is all fine and well, considering the City of Brotherly love previously donned titles like “Fattest City,” “Ugliest City” and even “Worst Drivers,” but once I saw Cosmo’s picks for what to do in Philly, I was disappointed.
Check out Philly’s Hot-City Guide page to see for yourself, but all I’ve got to say is that they list Chickie’s and Pete’s as the city’s best bar, and list that ESPN’s “Cold Pizza” naming it third best sports bar in the country as the reason why. Not to dis Chickie’s and Pete’s or say I was expecting a Philadelphia Weekly-esque familiarity with the city, but come on, what an obvious choice.
Speaking of bars in Philly, disregard that Cosmo post and check out TTN’s Philly Bar Guide, coming in the St. Patty’s Day issue.
M. Night Shyamalan apparently wasn’t happy at the first open audition, so he’s doing it again.
THE LAST AIRBENDER Casting Call
February 7, 2009
Independence Visitor Center
Check out the flyer here.
All ethnicities and ages are encouraged. (Sounds like a Craigslist ad gone bad.)
The call is for Shyamalan’s next movie, The Last Airbender. Apparently, it just cast Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel, so I’m thinking Shyamalan is having a sixth sense that this movie could actually be successful.
