23 seasons in, ‘The Real World’ still wants you

The Real World is hosting an open casting call for its 23rd season on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Raven Lounge (1718 Sansom St.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This time, though, producers are looking for a particular type of applicant:

“We’d love to include a person who is physically challenged, an individual struggling with weight issues, someone whose family or themselves are dealing with the immigrant-to citizenship process, an individual who is coming out of the foster care system, someone who is currently grieving over the loss of a spouse or significant other, or a cast member who wants to bring the spotlight of The Real World to a cause or social issue they care deeply about.”

All others may apply, as well. Have a headshot ready.

Rick’s Steaks finds a new home

It was one of the biggest scandals that the Reading Terminal market was ever involved in.

Not that there were many scandals…

Rick’s Steaks, which was ousted from Reading Terminal last year for poor relations with the board, has found a more upscale home. Its new location is under construction at the Bellevue on South Broad Street.

The menu is the same, according to the Inquirer’s (and Temple’s) Michael Klein, but will expand with soups and breakfast items.

Maybe the ousting from the Terminal isn’t so bad for Rick’s, after all.

Philly’s … hotter when you sleep over?

Cosmopolitan magazine thinks so. While wandering aimlessly around the Internet … not surfing cosmopolitan.com, of course, I happened to stumble upon the steamy women’s magazine’s “Hot City Guide,” in which Philadelphia, along with every cliche city and some not-so-hot cities (Jackson Hole, Colo., anyone?), makes the cut as one of the “hottest” cities in the U.S.

This is all fine and well, considering the City of Brotherly love previously donned titles like “Fattest City,” “Ugliest City” and even “Worst Drivers,” but once I saw Cosmo’s picks for what to do in Philly, I was disappointed.

Check out Philly’s Hot-City Guide page to see for yourself, but all I’ve got to say is that they list Chickie’s and Pete’s as the city’s best bar, and list that ESPN’s “Cold Pizza” naming it third best sports bar in the country as the reason why. Not to dis Chickie’s and Pete’s or say I was expecting a Philadelphia Weekly-esque familiarity with the city, but come on, what an obvious choice.

Speaking of bars in Philly, disregard that Cosmo post and check out TTN’s Philly Bar Guide, coming in the St. Patty’s Day issue.

Yorktown meeting to be held at noon April 1

The Zoning Board of Adjustment will hold its second meeting concerning Temple students living in Yorktown on April 1. The meeting is at 1515 Arch St. and will be held at noon in room 18002.

If you don’t live in Yorktown, and don’t care about anybody who does, go see Lady Gaga at the Electric Factory the same day at 8 p.m.

Or, go to both, and get your civic involvement and your “just dance” on. All in one day.

Shyamalan is still looking for you

M. Night Shyamalan apparently wasn’t happy at the first open audition, so he’s doing it again.

THE LAST AIRBENDER Casting Call
February 7, 2009
Independence Visitor Center
Check out the flyer here.

All ethnicities and ages are encouraged. (Sounds like a Craigslist ad gone bad.)

The call is for Shyamalan’s next movie, The Last Airbender. Apparently, it just cast Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel, so I’m thinking Shyamalan is having a sixth sense that this movie could actually be successful.

Second chance for some more eats

Philadelphia’s bi-annual restaurant week has been extended for a second week. The devastating economy is most likely the cause behind the second week of discounted dinners. For $35 at participating restaurants, diners can get a minimum of three courses.

Restaurant week runs until February 6th, for a list of participating restaurants and menus click here.

Hurry up, reservations fill up fast.

The city of Brewery Love

For all those Eagles fans looking to drown their Super Bowl sorrows in a good beer, Philadelphia might be the best place to do it.

The New York Times recently heralded the city’s brewery scene. Brewing beer is nothing new here, one of Williams Penn’s first actions when he got to town was to build a brewery. The trend has continued and Philadelphia held its first beer week last year.

For the full list of local breweries the NYT’s recommends click here.
