Matt Langel to be named head coach at Colgate

Matt Langel, an assistant on the men’s basketball team, will be named head coach at Colgate University, according to a report by OwlScoop.com

Langel, who came over from the University of Pennsylvania with Temple coach Fran Dunphy before the 2006-2007 season, spent five years on North Broad Street. During his time at Temple, Langel focused primarily on the guards and was instrumental in the recruitment of a number of players, including junior guard Juan Fernandez.

At 32 years old, Langel will be the second-youngest Division-1 coach in the nation behind IPFW’s Dane Fife.

Lavoy Allen garners Big 5 Player of the Year award

Lavoy Allen, the men’s basketball team’s all-time leading rebounder, earned the Robert V. Geasey Trophy, which is presented annually to the Philadelphia Big 5’s Most Outstanding Player. Allen is the first Temple player to garner the honor since Mark Tyndale shared the honor with St. Joseph’s forward Pat Calathes in 2008.

Allen averaged 11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game en route to being name to the Atlantic Ten Conference All-Conference squad for the second-straight year.

Junior guard Ramone Moore joined Allen on the Big 5 First Team. Junior guard Juan Fernandez was named to the second team.

Former Temple guard Aaron McKie, who, along with Rick Brunson and Eddie Jones, was recently inducted into Temple’s Hall of Fame, spoke to a handful of media outlets, including The Temple News, at halftime of Sunday’s win over St. Joseph’s.

McKie, an honorable mention Associated Press All-American during the 1992-93 season, finished his career sixth on Temple’s all-time scoring list with 1,650 points. McKie never came off the bench for the Owls, as he started 92 games in his three-year tenure on North Broad Street.

McKie was drafted in the first round of the 1993 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers. McKie would also later play for Detroit, Philadelphia and the Los Angeles Lakers during his 14-year professional career. While with the Sixers, McKie was named the Sixth Man of the Year following the 2000-01 season. McKie would later join the Sixers as an assistant coach, a position he still holds.

According to a ranking system by Klout.com, a website used to measure one’s online significance, Temple’s official twitter account (@templeuniv) is ranked No. 8 when it comes to influential colleges on Twitter.

Each college was ranked on a scale of 1-100, with 100 being more significant. A college’s score was determining 35 different factors, including how many people the twitter account reaches, how often your tweets are retweeted and how influential your followers are.

Temple’s score was 53. Stanford came in No. 1 with a score of 70.

Football team officially announces Wilkerson’s draft decision

The football team has issued a press release that confirms that junior defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson will enter the NFL Draft.

“I enjoyed my time at Temple University,” Wilkerson said in the release. “It was a good experience for me. I’m thankful for the opportunity for a scholarship and for an education. I promise to come back and get my degree. I’m definitely going to miss my teammates and being a student-athlete at Temple.”

Experts vary on where Wilkerson could be drafted. Most have him leaving the board around the third round, but CBSSports’ Rob Rang released a mock draft yesterday that featured Wilkerson being drafted No. 26 overall in the first round by the New Orleans Saints.

Peanut Joseph suffers season-ending injury

Elijah “Peanut” Joseph, the football team’s starting middle linebacker, has played his last game for the Owls.

The 6-foot-2-inch Connecticut native suffered an injury to his right knee in the team’s loss to Ohio last Tuesday. Joseph was carted off the field.

The senior appeared in all 10 games this year while making seven starts. Joseph was named a First Team All-MAC selection last season. He finished his career with 27 career starts.

According to a press release from the team, Joseph is expected to be ready for spring drills and any NFL Draft workouts.

Football players under investigation for rape

Two football players are under investigation for rape-related charges, according to CBS3 and KYW 1060.

According to the allegations, the two players returned to their on-campus dormitory and invited the victim back to their room before raping her. The players reportedly lived on the same dorm floor as the victim.

CBS spoke to school officials, who confirmed the incident and also stated that the case has been turned over to Philadelphia Police. A source also reported to CBS that alcohol was involved.

Women’s soccer coach resigns

According to a news release from the athletic department, David Jones, the coach of the women’s soccer team for the past eight seasons, has resigned.

Jones had been the coach of the Owls since 2003. During his tenure, the Cherry and White went 38-95-14. The Owls went 6-12-1 during this season, including 1-6-1 in Atlantic Ten Conference play.

Former football player arrested for DUI

Raheem Brock, a defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks and Temple alumnus, was arrested for driving under the influence on Saturday morning.

Brock, who played for the Owls from 1997 to 2001, was released from jail pending charges. Brock would go on to play in Seattle’s game against Arizona on Sunday.

Brock was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002 but was released before the season started.

The 6-foot-4-inch end would then sign with the Indianapolis Colts. After eight season with the team, Brock signed with the Tennessee Titans before finding his way to Seattle.

According to NFL.com, the Washington State Patrol confirmed the arrest.
