Authorities announced today a University of Pennsylvania junior is under being indicted for hacking into the Penn computer system a year ago after he was kicked out of a chat room, further proving that hackers take the most pleasure in exacting the largest amount of vengeance for as trivial an event as possible.
The student, Josh Goldstein, collaborated with a New Zealander known as AKILL to take over victims’ computers and brainwash them into his drones. Neither the AP nor the Inquirer article detailed the chat room dispute, but sometimes, things like this are best left to the imagination.
The FBI is charging Goldstein with fraud and conspiracy, which could lead to a year in prison without access to IRC. As of now, Penn is still deciding whether or not it wants to take its own disciplinary action against Goldstein or simply boast about the canniness of their students.
Goldstein was located after the feds traced his location back to three computers he used from an account taken from his friend. They also found a connection between virus files on Penn’s computer system that contained the admittedly witty alias “Digerati,” which is apparently also Goldstein’s nom du plume on his poetry published on Facebook. All of our Penn readers are encouraged to access Goldstein’s profile and publish his poetry on this blog.
