Impending snowstorm halts campus activities

TUr Door and Owl Loop bus services will be canceled Saturday, and two basketball games were rescheduled as an impending snowstorm approaches Philadelphia this weekend.

“Conditions permitting, TUr Door and the Owl Loop will resume service as soon as possible Sunday,” the university wrote in an alert sent to the Temple community.

The men’s basketball game against Southern Methodist University was rescheduled to Sunday, Jan. 24, at 12 p.m. The women’s game against the University of Houston, which was scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., will now be played Friday, Feb. 12. The time has not yet been determined.

Early Friday forecasts predicted 12 to 18 inches of snow that could arrive in full force as early as 4 p.m. in the city. Some forecasters had upped predictions to 20 inches by 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The impending snow also canceled Free Food Fun Friday in the Student Center.

Snow causes minor disruption at Elmira Jeffries

Fire and police crews respond to blocked vent at Elmira Jeffries on Dec. 17. Jenelle Janci TTN

Snowfall from early in the day blocked off a laundry vent on the second floor of Elmira Jeffries Residence Hall, leading to a brief evacuation of the dorm Tuesday evening, Dec. 17.

Charlie Leone, the acting executive director of Campus Safety Services, said about five students had to leave the residence hall around 5 p.m., as police and fire crews inspected the scene.

Leone said there were no injuries or damage to the dorm reported.

Young sledders take to Mt. Temple

While many students spent the day fussing about the latest installment of Snowmageddon, and the university’s decision to not close the university, other people saw the silver-lining: a snow-clad pile of dirt.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a group of people, who appeared to be local middle- to high-school aged youngsters, were seen taking to the dirt mound adjacent to the Dirt Lot for some good, old-fashioned sledding.

The Dirt Lot, at 11th Street and Montgomery Avenue, is infamously known for its risky, unregulated parking space. Did its neighboring dirt mound become an intermediate alp for the young sledders, or a temporary safety hazard?

Fear not, trash day is back

Sick of walking out the door each morning only to see your trash can where you left it days ago? Get ready to part ways with the 40s that have grown so comfortable in your recycling bin: Trash pick up is set to resume next week, said Alex Dews, the policy and program director for the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. Dews noted that compared to the size of the storm, the slightly more than week-long wait for trash and recycling pick up to restart is minimal.

Set out the garbage bags that have been smelling up your hallway on trash day next week, but seeing how temperamental Mother Nature can be, no one’s making any promises.

Facing emergency, Temple remains open

It’s beginning to look like something you’d read in the satirical Onion newspaper rather than a legit news source.

As of Sunday night, while a winter nor easter is passing through the Delaware Valley dumping what could be as much as a foot of snow on the ground, Temple University remains open, according to temple.edu/alert. Acknowledging that the city declared a weather emergency, Temple reports this, posted at 8:30 p.m.

A winter storm warning with the potential for several inches of snow has been issued for Philadelphia and surrounding communities. Temple University administrators are monitoring the situation and will make an evaluation early Monday morning regarding classes.

In other words, pack your books for your 8:40 class, as Fox 29’s John Bolaris just called a “hazardous situation” forming on the roads between 7 and 11 a.m. tomorrow.

The snow-day tradition at Temple is nothing new, so you shouldn’t be surprised. Bundle up out there.

DISCLAIMER: Of course, this is a intentionally satirical post but contains factual information from Temple’s Web site. Stay with Broad & Cecil for information on any potential Temple closing.

Keeping up with a snow-day tradition

It’s almost 7:15 a.m. Meteorologists have warned of wretched travel conditions, especially for the morning commute. Many area school districts have closed, or at the very least have called two hours late. Rain is falling and quickly turning to ice. Conditions are just bad.

In keeping with Temple tradition

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Weather notice:

The University will be open for business and holding
classes as scheduled, on Wednesday, January 28.

Nevermind the unnecessary comma. Temple successfully continues its streak of not offering a full snow day to students in exactly how many years? I can tell you it’s been at least four.

So get out those snowboots and pray you don’t slip and break your arm.
