According to a Feb. 6 Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) news release, two suspects responsible for multiple robberies in North Philadelphia’s 22nd and 26th police districts have been detained.
Timothy Ballard, 33, and Kevin Wilson, 27, were identified as suspects after many anonymous tips about the robberies were given to the PPD. Because of the community’s tips, the identities of the suspects were solidified and given to local news outlets on Dec. 2, 2011. Wilson then turned himself in four days later, on Dec. 5, and Ballard did the same on Feb. 1, 2012.

Temple defeated Atlantic Ten Conference opponent Rhode Island 73-56 on Saturday afternoon to improve its in-conference record to 6-2, good for first place in the A-10.
The Owls were led in scoring again by redshirt-senior guard Ramone Moore. Moore scored 22 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Moore has scored a combined 68 points in his last three games and has led Temple in scoring in five consecutive games.
Temple entered the day one back in the loss column to La Salle in the A-10, but Saint Joseph’s defeat of the Explorers early Saturday, partnered with the Owls’ win, has Temple sitting alone at the top of the A-10 for the first time all season.
After losing two of their first three A-10 games, the Owls have won five consecutive games in conference.

International dance and fashion show participants are needed for Temple’s Celebration of Globalization on March 30, a biannual event that showcases Temple University and Philadelphia’s dedication to globalization.
Participants have the chance to win a grand prize of $1,000! Below are details for the international dance performance and fashion show. Interested participants are encouraged to submit proposals by February 6. The Celebration of Globalization form can found here.
INTERNATIONAL DANCE PERFORMANCE: Individuals dancers and dance groups are invited to perform a five minute routine and compete for a chance to win a monetary prize of $1,000! Auditions will be held in mid-February. If selected to perform, a panel of judges will determine the winner at the event. Second and third place prizes of $500 and $250 will also be offered.
PARTICIPANTS FOR THE FASHION SHOW: Students are invited to participate by wearing a traditional international outfit that represents a particular country or culture. A photograph of the traditional apparel will need to be submitted with the attached proposal form and participants will then be selected by the steering committee. All fashion show participants will be entered into a drawing to win CASH PRIZES!

The tragedy surrounding last night’s suicide on Liacouras Walk continues to resonate throughout the Temple community as more information surfaces about the individual. Though the young man was not currently registered at Temple, Ray Betzer, assistant vice president of university communications, has confirmed that the victim was last registered as a Temple student during one of the summer 2010 semesters.

Walking home from the TECH Center. just now, I came across this small memorial that seems to commemorate the victim of last night’s apparent suicide.
I hope his loved ones find peace when they are ready.

At approximately 6:50 p.m., Temple released a TU Alert reporting a shooting on the 1900 block of Liacouras Walk. Since the alert, officials have confirmed the incident was an apparent suicide by a a non-Temple male.

Lynda.com, a website focused on creating quality how-to content with 900 courses and more than 56,000 tutorials, has recently swept the hearts of Temple students.
Computer Services signed a contract with Lynda.com, a website providing free tutorials organized by subject software and expert instructors on video editing, business, photography, web design, graphic design and much more.
The organized and easily navigated website it now conveniently located on all current student’s TUportal pages. With this availability, students – especially “technologically-deficient” ones like me – might spare a few headaches, tears, Advil and sleep-deprived nights at the TECH center.

It looks like the craze has returned to Philly.
Dayglow is back with an all new show: L!FE IN COLOR.
According to the Dayglow Philadelphia Facebook page, there will be improved paint cannons that shoot more than 100 feet into the crowd, a brand new laser show and refined stage and lights to enhance everyone’s Dayglow experience.
This time, the event will take place at The Festival at Penn’s Landing on 121 north Columbus Blvd. on April 13, 2012. The headliners are still waiting to be announced.
Tickets went on sale today at noon, with prices ranging from at least $50 for general admission to more than $90 for VIP.

The Owls (13-8, 6-1 Atlantic Ten Conference) defeated St. Joseph’s 80-70, as three Temple players scored at least 20 points. The Hawks (14-7, 4-3 A-10) hosted the Owls at the Hagan Arena, which is also the arena for the A-10 Tournment held on March 2-5.
Senior guards Shey Peddy and Kristen McCarthy scored 26 and 21 points, respectively, while junior center Victoria Macaulay added a career-high 21 points. The trio of scorers marked the first time in program history that three players scored 20 or more points in a single game since 1989.
In addition, senior guard BJ Williams had nine assists for the Owls. The Maryland native reached a milestone 100 assists for the season, which is a career-high for her during a single season.
