Yard’s Brewery Pint Night at Earth

On Thursday, Sept. 12, Yard’s Brewery will be taking over the beers on tap at Earth – Bread and Brewery in Germantown. The Philadelphia brewery, which is located in Northern Liberties, will be showcasing its newest concoction – PYNK, as well as old favorites including Taste of Good Hope, the Philadelphia Pale Ale and the Brawler. PYNK, which is new this year, is being marketed by Yards as a tart berry ale. There will also be complementary pint glasses.

Later that day, Earth will be having its Happy Hour from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It will be $2 off its current house beers on tap and at 9:30 p.m. there will be live music by Brandon Morsberger – commonly known as Brandad.

Greensgrow Farm Workshop

Greensgrow Farm is hosting two workshops this month hosted by local food bloggers. The first program, a natural soda-making workshop, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14. Amanda Feifer of local food fermentation blog Phickle, will teach guests soda brewing methods that include using seasonal produce, such as ginger. The second session is Saturday, Sept. 21 from noon to 2 p.m. Blogger Marissa McClellan of Food In Jars will host the Tomato Jam Workshop. This session will show guests how to preserve and make tomato jams. Each participant will leave with his or her own jar of jam.

Punk Rock Flea Market

R5 Productions announced this week that its winter Punk Rock Flea Market will be on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 at the Punk Rock Flea Market Dome at 461 N. 9th St. Its website expects over 500 table vendors selling all things punk from new and used crafts, records, clothes and more. There is no admission costs, but a $3 donation is accepted and will get attendees in for both days. Applications for vendors have been available since Sept. 7 and can be found online at r5productions.com. They will be accepted until all spots are taken up. Vendors will be chosen carefully to assure the punkiest crafts are available this holiday season.

PEP Bowl

PEP Bowl, located at 1200 S. Broad St., offers inexpensive fun on Thursday nights. From 9:30 p.m. to midnight, bowling games cost $4.00 and shoe rentals are $3.00. During the week, from 2 to 6 p.m., the cost is $14 for two hours of all-you-can-bowl gaming. which includes shoe rental. PEP Bowl is located at Broad and Federal Streets and is an original 1950’s bowling alley. Take the Broad Street line to Ellsworth-Federal Station to get there from Temple. Making Philly Hot List for best bowling consistently, including this year, the alley must be doing something right. Head over with a group of friends for some competitive fun or plan an inexpensive date there.

Joining them will be Philadelphia’s favorite goth rockers Night Sins.

Selections from the Permanent Collection

The Fabric Workshop and Museum located on Arch Street in Philadelphia is a unique museum that focuses on creating new art out of unconventional materials and fabrics. Since June 22, the museum has been showing a series of documents from The Permanent Collection. This exhibit will only be lasting throughout the fall and will showcase FWM’s artistic history that was made with creative contemporary artists. Many movements within the field of The Fabric Workshop since 1977 will be shown throughout the exhibit. There are over 5,600 objects for display in the exhibit. Work by prior resident artists such as Sidney Goodman, Tom Marioni and Jean Shin will be showcased. The museum is $3 for each adult and the exhibit is located at 1222 Arch Street.

Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll

Each summer, thousands head to University City for the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll. Local businesses along the street offer samples of their food and drinks, each costing only $1. Some of the local vendors include Little Baby’s Ice Cream offering mini scoops, Dock Street Brewery’s mini pints, and Zipcar selling reusable grocery bags. Dollar deals are also featured at retail shops such as Baltimore Avenue Pet Shop and Firehouse Bicycles, which offer pint glasses and inner tubes. Food trucks such as Sweet Box and the Tot Cart will also be on site offering dollar deals. Live music, face painting, balloon art and more will be at the 46th Street Triangle. This year’s first scheduled date in June was canceled, making this the only Dollar Stroll of the summer. The event runs on Baltimore Avenue between 43rd and 51st streets on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information and the full line up of vendors and their locations, visit www.universitycity.org.

Greenfest Philly

Greenfest Philly will be held on Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Headhouse Row, found on 2nd Street between South and Pine streets. The event will have live entertainment, food, a beer garden and informational sessions on what it means to live green. Their website boosts attendance of more than 100 vendors and exhibitors for festival goers to check out. Though the festival doesn’t have their musical lineup up yet, last year’s performers included Cheers Elephant, Mount Joy, Abstract Verses and You Do You. Festival goers can find vendors and exhibits from organizations such as Drexel Smart House, Philly Aids Thrift and Yumtown USA. Admission to the event is free, but this year the festival is offering a “Greencard” for $25, which gives attendees $10 towards food, two beers, a shirt and much more. There will also be a free bike valet. Greenfest Philly is sponsored by the Clean Air Council. To find more information, visit greefestphilly.org.

Philadelphia’s own experimental/eclectic/indie/unquantifiable quintet Man Man will be performing at The Porch at Amtrak’s 30th Street Station for XPN’s latest installment of Free At Noon. The group has another dose of strange, undefinable goodness looming in the form of their brand new LP “On Oni Pond.” As the name of the event implies, the whole shindig is free. In promotion of their latest undertaking, an 11 track LP entitled “An Object,” art punk duo No Age are embarking on a world tour that’ll see them venture as far as Helsinki, Finland. But before their European tour, the Sub Pop Records group is trekking stateside, including a stop at PhilaMOCA to spread their weird, noisy gospel.

Looking to bring a splash of fun to someone?

Sometimes college students end up with a kid by their side for the day, and one who isn’t easily entertained. If a student such as yourself or someone that you may know is stuck babysitting for the night, the Philadelphia Museum of Art may be the place to take them.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has options for kids, families and friends through both audio  and self-guided tours. For students who babysit or have younger siblings, there is a tour that allows kids to imagine they’re a knight getting ready to be in a tournament. The “Arms and Armors” collection will be viewed, followed by opportunities for drawing and writing. There is also a chance for kids to make their own rug through the “Discover Design” program, where Islamic art is studied for its colors and patterns. Lastly, interesting landscape paintings from all over Europe can be studied through the program “Looking at Landscapes.”

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, and until 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays. It’s located at 2000 Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Admission for students is $14.
