Hopefully for all of you, finals week is just a distant sleep-deprived, Adderall-fueled blur from which you finally feel recovered. It’s something I don’t look forward to enduring in another four months.

Starting on Jan. 22, the first day of school, Saxbys Coffee is resetting the doomsday clock for all of us by handing out 2,008 free cups of coffee at its new Liacouras Walk location – one cup for each year, if you didn’t catch that. The coffee free-for-all starts the same day of Saxbys official opening, which I wrote about in December. I’m sure it will lure a few students back into the caffeine habits they made half-hearted attempts to shake for New Year’s resolutions.

I, on the other hand, am arrogant enough to inform you that I’ll have had about five free cups on the VIP opening to which I was invited as part of my ongoing effort to sustain myself solely by writing stories and getting goodies in return. Actually, Saxbys CEO sent me a bag of the stuff to test for the article. It’s got a much smoother flavor than Starbucks’ Southern California-smokey boldness, so I’m sure the 2,008-cups campaign will steal some of you from The Man’s green and white triple venti-sized fingers.

And besides, when you order a small coffee at Saxby’s, you don’t have to sound like a pretentious urbanite.
